London Olympics 2012
As no doubt many of you are aware, the Olympics are being held in London in 2012 and we here at Onison are delighted to say that we have been involved in the construction of the new site.
It is a fantastic honour to be able to work on such an outstanding and historic site and it is little surprise that our hard work, professionalism and exceptional equipment have led us to this point.
Working alongside the lift specialists Schindler, we have been supporting the installation and building of new lifts in the new Aquatics Centre. Our Onison Mast Climbing Work Platforms enabled easy access to the new lift structures and we were pleased to be able to help build a fantastic new building. The centre, of which construction began in 2008, is the gateway to the Olympic Park and after the Games it will be used as a local community facility.
Alongside our work at the new Aquatics Centre, we have also aided construction of the new Media Hub and the catering facilities.
Again, our specialised Onison Mast Climbing Work Platforms enabled builders and lift engineers easy access to the lift structure, without having to use the less secure traditional scaffolding.
Our most interesting challenge during our work on the Olympics 2012 site was providing construction workers with easy lift access to the ArcelorMittal Orbit. The Orbit is a 115 metre tall sculpture which incorporates the five Olympic rings. While it is a spectacular piece, the designer wanted ‘the sensation of instability’ and the unusual swirling design certainly made it difficult to install lift access. Our experience and equipment was vital as the unusual shape of the sculpture would make it impossible for traditional scaffolding. While presenting us with an interesting challenge, it was an honour to be involved in such a remarkable project and our Onison Mast Climbing Platform was the perfect answer to the lift access questions raised by the interesting shape of the piece.
The lift structure itself will run through the middle of the sculpture and take guests up to the top, where they can be promised spectacular views.
